I put the cigarette to my lips and inhale the smoke, letting it fill my lungs. The darkness of night washes over the backroads of Eastpoint as I fly through on my way home. With the window rolled down, and the wind slipping inside, I feel freer than I have in a long damn time. The only thing that could make this night better is if Rylie had let me stay. Falling asleep with her in my arms, even if it was on that cramped, lame excuse for a bed, would've been the perfect ending to a night that started as utter shit.
When I pull into the Carter Estate, I note that the lights are on. Everyone's home. I don't bother to pull the car into the garage. Instead, I park it right out front and drop what remains of the cigarette in my hand to the gravel beneath my feet as I step out, and crush the burning end under my shoe.
I hear laughter when I enter the houseâdrunken laughter. I close my eyes for a moment and just relish in that sound. It's been too fucking long since we've had anything as real as the sound of Avalon's giggling. Whatever devious thing she's doing, I know we'll all put up with it if it keeps her laughing like that. Rounding the corner into the living room, I spot her on the floor with a drink by her side as she holds Braxton's hand captive. He watches her with obvious amusementâhis hookers nowhere to be foundâas she carefully paints his nails black.
"Having fun?" I quip as I drop onto the sofa.
Her head pops up and she smiles my way. "Where've you been, Frontman?" she asks. "Is Rylie not coming?"
I scrub a hand down my face. "Not tonight, Ava," I tell her. "She's tired."
She gives me a look before she returns to painting Brax's nails. "Wonder who made her that way," she replies.
I grin. Maybe it makes me a dick to be proud of the fact that I know I'm the reason for Rylie's exhaustion, but I don't care. All this, and I haven't even had a real taste of her yet. Not the way I want to.
"Baby." Dean's voice echoes through the room before he appears, carrying a giant blanket. "Ready?"
She puts the finishing touches on Braxton's nails and hops up. "Yup." She pops the last of the word as she strides towards him. When she stops at his front, she leans up on both of her feet, rising to her toes, offering her lips to him, which he, of course, takes as an open invitation. There is still a heavy pang of envy in my chest when I see them like that. I'd never want to take away his happiness, or hers, but at the same time ⦠what they have is what I want.
A true partner. Someone to call mine.
The couch dips down next to me, redirecting my attention to Braxton as he blows out a breath
